Court approves new road superintendent position, commissioners request input on interviews and right-of-way work

The Commissioners Court approved a new full-time Road Superintendent position (grade 117) to be placed under the county engineer as part of the FY2027 staffing plan. County engineer staff presented a job description attached to the agenda and said funds were budgeted for the position in 2026 and 2027.

Several commissioners sought clarity on how the superintendent's duties would intersect with commissioners' precinct responsibilities, requested a workshop or meeting to determine implementation and emphasized that commissioners should have input on the interview process. County engineer staff said the position was intended to assist the county engineer with planning and execution of road projects and to free up engineering staff to handle other county construction projects. The court approved the posting and hiring process and directed staff to include commissioner input on interviews when practical.

"I've attached the new job description that was put together for the new Road Superintendent... the money is in the funding for 2026," county engineer staff said during the presentation. Commissioners emphasized that right-of-way collections and oversight should be clarified and that the superintendent would work under the county engineer while coordinating closely with precinct commissioners.
