Durham County elections director Derek Bowens outlined practical steps for residents who want to register, get a photo ID or vote early for the Nov. 3 general election.
"The registration deadline, not including early voting same day registration, is October 9," Bowens said. He described registration options including online DMV registration and the information required on the form (name, residential address, last four of Social Security number or driver's license, signature, date of birth and citizenship affirmation) that triggers issuance of a voter card once processed.
Bowens said early voting runs from Oct. 15 through Oct. 31 and that the county adopted a plan providing 17 full days across 10 locations. For voters lacking required photo identification, the elections office conducts monthly library events and occasional pop-ups; after verifying identifying information and completion of a photo ID request form, staff can print a free photo ID on-site that will satisfy the voting requirement.
Bowens also provided contact options: the elections website, phone line (919-560-0700), and the Deco Votes mobile app for real-time notifications. He encouraged voters to check election materials ahead of early voting to confirm locations and sample ballots.
