District leadership presented the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) district review that examined six standards: leadership and governance; curriculum and instruction; assessment; human resources/professional development; student support; and financial/asset management. "They looked at leadership and governance, curriculum and instruction...and it was an extremely comprehensive review," the district leader said, noting strengths in strategic-plan engagement, teacher‑leader structures and PBIS implementation. The presentation said the district’s budget and five‑year capital plan were praised for transparency and public engagement.
DESE recommended several areas for growth that the district plans to address, including increased family engagement with special‑education CPAC, diversifying the educator workforce, formalizing a written division of responsibilities between town and district, and clarifying cell‑phone and BYOD policy implementation. Board members asked whether DESE provided concrete best practices (the presenters said some examples exist but implementation is locally tailored) and discussed next steps for using the report's classroom-observation data to inform teacher evaluations and school improvement work. The district said it will incorporate DESE findings into ongoing improvement plans and follow-up meetings.
