Courtney Jones introduced herself to the Tallulah City Council and described her legal experience in Monroe, noting weekly courtroom work and misdemeanor practice in local parishes. The council reviewed her resume and discussed logistics including court dates, orientation with the presiding judge, and training; Jones asked whether mileage or travel allowance would be included in the magistrate compensation.
"I am an attorney based out of Monroe, Louisiana. I currently have my own private practice, and I do public defender work," Courtney Jones (S9) said during her introduction. Council members deferred final action on the appointment until the public hearing on ordinances that included the magistrate's pay, and the item was tabled initially so the ordinance language could be settled.
Later in the meeting, after the public hearing and ordinance votes, the council voted to appoint Jones to the position and to set the magistrate's pay at $1,250 per month. Chair (S1) indicated the pay ordinance would take effect on Sept. 3 and that the council would provide Jones with orientation materials and contact information for local court staff.
Why it matters: A new magistrate affects local court operations and scheduling; the council tied the appointment to an ordinance setting compensation and discussed training and procedural orientation.
