A staff member presented a proposed operating budget of $12,408,225 at a public hearing for Shelbyville ISD, saying the total is down $736,000 — a 5.58% decrease — because the district is not finishing a planned field house this year. The presenter framed the packet before the board as a summary of numbers the board had already reviewed.
"So the operating budget we're proposing is, 12,408,225 thousand dollars That's, down $736,000 which is a 5.58 decrease," the staff member said. The presenter added that the reduction is driven "mainly because we're not finishing up a field house." The packet also shows the district has no debt-service budget this year.
The staff member said taxable values increased by more than $94,000,000 this year, with most of that growth tied to capital production; they warned values "could easily go down that much or more next year." The meeting opened with a prayer and the presenter noted procedural timing for the evening: a later meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the board will review a required security-audit report later in the agenda.
The staff member offered to answer questions from board members and signaled that the board will be asked to take action on the budget and tax rate as part of the hearing process.
