A staff member proposed a tax rate of 66.22¢ and said the recommendation represents roughly a 0.5¢ decrease from the prior rate, but the district's prepared impact calculation indicates it would result in an increase for taxpayers in practice.
"The tax rate that we'll be proposing is 66.22¢, which is about a 0.5¢ decrease," the staff member said, and added: "What we will find is when we do the impact on the, tax prepared impact, it actually states that it's an increase even though we're going down 0.5 a cent when they do their calculations." The presenter did not provide a detailed example of the impact calculation in the recorded segments.
The presenter also noted that the packet compares tax rates across Shelby County districts and that the district's total rate remains among the lowest in the county. Staff told board members the summary sheet contains the detailed figures used in the impact calculation and invited questions.
