Jefferson County commissioners voted to restore the health department’s public health fund (1159) to $100,000 for calendar year 2027 after staff said the line had been reduced to $70,000 in recent years.
“It is a request to go back to a 100,000,” said the staff member presenting the line-item changes, summarizing the department’s request and the prior funding level. Commissioners adopted a motion to restore the 1159 public health allocation without recorded opposition.
In the same agenda item, staff described an internal reorganization: the county’s food specialist has performed both food-safety and environmental duties since 2026. The board approved changing the job title to Environmental Specialist and increasing the base compensation so the combined role’s pay would total approximately $46,000—$36,000 paid from fund 1159 and roughly $10,000 from fund 1161, per the motion approved by the commission.
Commissioners said the pay change was intended to reflect the difficulty of recruiting a replacement at the current combined workload and salary. “We would not find somebody for that current salary to do both positions,” a committee member observed during debate. The county directed most of the raise to the 1159 public-health fund and approved recoding the combined position’s account description accordingly.
The changes will be recorded in the 2027 appropriation documents; staff said any remaining technical questions about exact account coding would be finalized before the budget adoption.
