City of Mebane staff warned motorists that the NC 119 Bypass is likely to carry heavier-than-normal traffic while Norfolk Southern performs rolling rail replacement work in Mebane. "The NC 119 Bypass is expected to experience heavier than normal traffic due to the rail closures, so please take that into account," the announcement said.
The city recommended drivers follow posted detours and allow additional travel time while crews work at individual crossings for two to five days each. "Please plan accordingly, follow posted detours, and allow additional travel time," the staff message said; officials also noted that some crossings may remain closed while newly installed asphalt settles and cures.
Motorists and businesses that depend on local crossings were directed to check daily updates from Norfolk Southern, which the city said will post end-of-day summaries of which crossings are closed and which are open. The city also framed the work as part of the Carolinian and Piedmont Passenger and Freight Improvements Project and reminded residents that schedules can change for weather, construction progress or rail operations.
Drivers seeking real-time status were directed to the North Carolina Railroad Company's project website and the City of Mebane's communications channels for notifications and detour information.
