A collaboration between Picture Peers, Share the Harvest, Springs Food Pantry and community volunteers wrapped up its summer lunch program with teens harvesting produce at a farm and preparing fresh, plant-based lunches for pantry families.
"So our goal is to encourage and get our teenagers, 13 through 18, out into the field, learning about various nonprofits in the area," program founder Brooke Bonsack said in on-air remarks describing the hands-on internship-style experience. Teens picked, prepped and labeled items, and community chefs helped convert produce into ready-to-eat entries suitable for children.
The program's farm director, Meredith Arm, described the effort as both educational and service-oriented, and a member of Springs Food Pantry told East End News that recipient families are excited about the weekly boxes. Organizers provided website links on air for more information and future opportunities.
