Public comment at the special meeting included a mix of support and concern for the proposed budget and tax rate.
John Swanson praised the budget's priorities for classroom instruction and teacher support, saying it "reflects a lot of tough decisions" and urging trustees to "keep supporting the tip of the spear, the teachers in the classroom." In contrast, Mike Shockley, a long-time VISD taxpayer, criticized what he described as repeated tax increases and said homeowners are being asked to "dig into the back pocket again." The district's staff responded that operating budgets are shaped by state formulas and that the tax-rate increase in this case is driven by new bond debt.
Other commenters, including Brett Baldwin, made non-fiscal recommendations: Baldwin urged expansion of career and technical education tied to local industry, exploring alternative employee health-plan models used elsewhere, and considering an International Baccalaureate pathway to enhance college readiness.
