County coastal and transportation staff briefed city and county elected officials on active and upcoming coastal projects affecting Marco Island, including a recently permitted Collier Creek rehabilitation dredge and planned sand renourishment work.
Trinity Scott, head of Transportation Management Services, said the Army Corps of Engineers gave approval for the Collier Creek dredge in August and staff "anticipate starting that project next year" with work extending into 2028. Scott and other staff detailed that some projects are partly funded with tourist development tax dollars and state DEP partnerships, while specific mitigation (dune plantings) may use FEMA funds. Scott also said county staff perform annual beach surveys to quantify pre‑ and post‑storm sand loss and pursue grant funding where appropriate.
Officials discussed how projects are prioritized and the role of legislative advocacy for projects that fall under federal jurisdiction, including Big Marco Pass monitoring. Commissioners urged coordination on legislative priorities to increase the chances of securing Army Corps attention and funding.
