Veneta's Business Advisory Committee reviewed an application from Not Your Mom's Tie Dye seeking a $3,875.45 business grant to help cover the purchase of a closed cargo trailer used for mobile sales and festival vending.
Jacob summarized the application and eligibility rules, noting the city's business grant program allows equipment and machinery and caps working-capital use for grants. Jacob said council allocated $50,000 to the program for the fiscal year and $40,000 remained for awards. The applicant, identified in committee discussion as Tiana, explained that she paid $1,300 of the $5,175.45 trailer cost personally and requested the remainder from the city. "The 1300 that I am matching is all of my working capital," Tiana said, adding that the rest of the grant would go toward paying down a loan balance so she could restore working capital for operations.
Committee members asked for documentation about the purchase and discussed whether the requested funds would be eligible given the grant rule that no more than 25% of a grant may be used for working capital. Jacob confirmed the committee could verify receipts and match documentation before forwarding a recommendation to council. The committee did not take a final recommendation vote during the public portion of the meeting; the applicant was asked to drop off for the executive session.
Why this matters: small-business grants are a routine but visible use of limited local economic development funds; committee vetting determines whether awards meet program rules and whether grant awards should be recommended to city council.
