A resident at Seadrift s Aug. 25, 2026 budget workshop told the council they were "verbally cut off" at a prior finance meeting while other speakers on the same topic were allowed to continue, and asked the body to put guardrails on public comment going forward.
"I'm a resident and a taxpayer of Seagriffs at the 08/25/2026 budget workshop. I was verbally cut off here in a finance business," the resident said, asking the council to acknowledge that on the record, adopt written rules for audience participation that apply equally and confirm they will not be singled out again. (Resident, S4)
The resident said other speakers were allowed to speak at length on the same item and that the inconsistent treatment raised a concern about viewpoint discrimination in a public forum. Council members acknowledged the comment but did not adopt new formal rules during the workshop. The resident specifically asked for three outcomes: a record acknowledgement, uniformly applied written rules for audience participation and confirmation they would not be singled out in future comment periods.
The exchange occurred during the public-comment portion of the meeting and was the only formal request for changes to audience-participation rules recorded in the workshop. Council members moved on to budget procedural matters after the comment and did not vote on the requests during the session.
What happens next: the resident asked the council to place the three items on the record; the council did not take a formal vote on changes to the public-comment procedure during the workshop.
