Human Resources presented a year‑to‑date workforce update to Mayor and Council on Aug. 27, describing recruiting, retention and development efforts across city departments.
HR lead Sandra told council the city’s workforce is a mix of newer and long‑tenured employees, with roughly 70% of staff having less than 10 years of service and more than 200 employees with 15+ years of service. Sandra highlighted initiatives including expanded internship programs, mentor orientation, a new performance management system, total compensation statements mailed to employees and benefits changes such as paid parental leave and enhanced long‑term disability.
Councilmembers thanked HR for promotions (72 YTD) and asked follow‑up questions about intern conversion to permanent roles and employee feedback on the new total compensation statements; Sandra said the department would track conversion data and reported positive anecdotal reactions to the mailed statements. "The HR team shines under pressure," she said during her presentation.
