A member of the public told Beaufort County Council during the Aug. 28 workshop that a dark‑money super PAC was formed in April to try to buy council seats and that an FEC filing listed the donor as "advanced an American advancement," described as a 501(c)(4) in the speaker's remarks.
"The report filed with the Federal Election Commission on July 15 listed the donor as advanced an American advancement, a well known 501(c)(4) front for super PACs," the commenter said, adding that "the PAC spent a $100,000, more than was spent by all the candidates combined" and accused the group of running negative ads against council members including Lawson. The allegation was made during the public‑comment period; no formal investigation or response by council was recorded in the workshop transcript.
Council did not take action on the allegation during the meeting. The comment is recorded as a claim made from the public comment period; verifying the FEC filing and ad spending would require review of FEC records and campaign finance reports.
