A majority of the Christian County commissioners approved a 0.0616 increase to the countywide property tax levy in a 2–1 vote, citing repeated budget cuts and unmet infrastructure needs.
One commissioner moved for the increase, saying, “I'll make a motion to improve the tax levy for the increase of 0.0616,” and the motion was seconded. Commissioners said prior years’ savings and cuts — including elimination of four county positions and suspended services such as recycling — left the county with little ability to absorb rising costs. The board discussed specific needs, including jail repairs and retaining law enforcement and road crews.
Commissioners debated alternatives including additional cuts, use taxes, and encouraging local spending to boost sales-tax revenue; several members reiterated a preference not to raise taxes if other revenue could be found. After discussion, the motion passed by a 2–1 tally. The presiding commissioner said the increase could be lowered later if revenues improved, but noted the immediate shortfall constrained current services and hiring.
The levy vote followed separate motions earlier in the meeting to keep road-district levies flat for the East side and at zero for the West side. The commission said it would monitor revenues and revisit levels if conditions change.
