Councilors debated a $265,000 additional appropriation for the city's risk/liability insurance fund after staff said the prior insurer would not renew and the broker placed coverage across multiple carriers.
Adrian explained the city's insurance renewal period runs July–July and that staff recently received bills from new carriers. "We did not get canceled — our renewal period is July. Our current company will not want to renew with us," Adrian told the council, which prompted questions about how long current coverage will last and why the item was not shared earlier with council members.
Several council members said they were frustrated that significant appropriations arrived on the agenda with little advance notice while the city was still in recovery operations. One councilor argued the city must prioritize residents and financial transparency but ultimately supported approving the appropriation so the city could make required payments to the new insurers.
The council moved, seconded and approved the appropriation (ordinance 20‑26‑18) after roll call.
Why it matters: insurance coverage and timely payment affect whether the city remains insured for claims; funding the new policy now prevents a coverage lapse but also draws on municipal resources during recovery.
