Carlsbad's 2026 Summer Reading Adventure, presented at the Aug. 26 Library Board meeting, ran from June 1 through Aug. 1 and included a mix of children, teen and adult programming across the system, senior librarian Ally Goodwin told trustees.
Goodwin said the library offered 52 summer-reading–related programs at three sites, compared with 63 programs in 2025, and reported 2,076 program attendees this year versus 1,928 last year. Patron registrations totaled 3,326, up 6.5% from 3,124 in 2025. Goodwin added that the library exceeded its 2,000,000-minute community reading goal and distributed 2,120 books to families.
Programs ranged from puppet shows and wildlife ambassadors for young children to AI story labs and anime painting for older kids and teens. Goodwin and colleague Terry Bradshaw said staff expanded scheduling with evening and Saturday offerings to reach working families, and they credited varied program types, staff outreach and a consolidated summer brochure and online calendar for stronger engagement.
Trustees asked about Sunday programming and outreach to 18–28 year‑olds; presenters said they are soliciting input from teens and boosting teen-focused programs and volunteer opportunities. The presenters closed by thanking sponsors—particularly the Friends of the Carlsbad City Library—for ongoing support.
