Residents push for Activity Center kitchen and ADA upgrades at Huachuca City CDBG hearing

Several residents told the council they want the Activity Center updated to be more accessible and usable for seniors, students and community programming.

Diane Hildebrant said the town should get ‘‘the kitchen back in the Activity Center, and also making the Activity Center ADA compliant,’’ noting that the ramp reaches the doors but residents struggle to open them. Other commenters and council members echoed the need for improved doors, accessible bathrooms and parking that would allow the building to host more programs and potentially generate modest rental revenue for the town.

Town Manager Suzanne Harvey asked whether proposed improvements should be scoped as a single project or as separate elements; SEAGO presenter William Osborne recommended considering State Special Projects (SSP) funding for initial planning and engineering so any future CDBG implementation application would be shovel‑ready. Osborne said that planning/design work is an eligible use (limited to 20% cap for some accounts) and that SSP grants can underwrite those early phases.
