Committee debates wording: commission, purchase, loan or partnership in acquisition methods

Committee members spent time debating the draft wording around how the town acquires art and whether the draft’s use of 'committee' was a typographical error for 'commission.'

Several members said the term should be 'commission' (lowercase) to reflect when the town hires an artist for a specific original work, and recommended the draft list methods in the order: purchase, loan, commission, gift, private partnership. One member suggested removing or simplifying a confusing paragraph and letting the definition block below lay out terms clearly. "So by purchase, loan, commission, gift or ... the role of the public art committee is to advise the town on matters pertaining to art acquisition," a member summarized.

The committee agreed to edit the language so that future readers will understand that the public art committee can recommend commissions and that the town itself can commission, purchase, accept loans or enter private partnerships for public art. Staff will redraft the paragraph to clarify the committee’s advisory role and to define commission, purchase and other methods.
