Council designates Bedford public‑works employees as first responders, approves use of APWA symbol

Public Works Director Lane Klein asked the council to designate Bedford public‑works personnel as first responders and to authorize use of the American Public Works Association (APWA) symbol on department materials. Klein said the designation recognizes existing emergency‑response duties and carries no change in pay, authority or ongoing costs.

"This designation just so you know, does not give special authority to change, it doesn't to change any requirements. It doesn't change our pay, our benefits by any means," Klein told council. He added the measure would allow the department to display badges and stickers and could support longer‑term credentialing through APWA standards.

Mayor and council members praised the department's role during storms, water main breaks and other incidents; the resolution was read into the record and passed unanimously. Staff said the item has no immediate financial impact and implementation would include signage and voluntary branding for vehicles and hard hats.
