Resident urges end to city's ALPR network, citing privacy and alleged misuse

Ivan Sverczyk addressed the council during citizen comments to urge an end to local automated license-plate-reader networks and similar surveillance tools. He framed his remarks around Fourth Amendment principles and alleged misuse of searches in other counties and locally.

Sverczyk said he reviewed local audit data and reported that in 2025 there were 156 searches logged with the stated reason of "protest," a use he argued is inconsistent with constitutionally protected activity and raises the risk of chilling protests. "These networks exist to provide nonstop surveillance conducted against every citizen all the time," he said, urging the council to have a vote to end the program.

Council did not take immediate action in response to the comment at this meeting; the matter was raised as part of public-comment input for future consideration.
