Griggs County commissioners review month of transition as merger plan advances

The Griggs County Commission reviewed one month of operational work related to a proposed merger of the auditor and treasurer offices at a special meeting on Aug. 10. The Chair opened the public meeting and asked interim staff for a status update; staff reported they had updated fee schedules and reconciled accounts through June and July after months of backlog. "It's been going really well," said Maddie, the interim staff member managing many of the tasks.

Commissioners focused on both the mechanics of the transition and how the public could participate. A staff advisor explained the statute-based process and said the law offers two paths: the commission can adopt a consolidation subject to a later referendum if citizens petition, or citizens can force a referendum by petition before the commission acts. The staff member summarized the legal view: "the law allows for 2 ways to go at it, and and we're doing 1 of the 2 ways." The commission scheduled a related public hearing for the evening and said final discussion will occur at the next regular meeting.
