Staff recommends condemning fire-damaged structure at 1556 29th Court South; public hearing to be set

City staff summarized an abatement board finding that the apartment building addressed as 1556 29th Court South is fire-damaged, unsecured and likely structurally compromised. Staff said property notifications were sent repeatedly and that the remedy (a 60-day abatement period, extended administratively) expired without corrective action; the abatement board concluded the structure created a public nuisance and is unsafe.

Staff recommended the council set a public hearing and determine whether to condemn the building under the applicable state code; staff also said demolition cost estimates would be brought back to council so a lien could be placed on the property if the city proceeds with demolition. “This notice…states that the building was left open to the elements after fire,” staff said, describing interior char and exterior loss of cladding and trim that increase collapse risk.
