Staff says traffic inspector vacancy led to enforcement gaps; residents told to use myCville to report issues

A resident asked who reviews traffic-management plans and enforces traffic control at construction sites. Staff replied that traffic engineers and a traffic inspector perform that role, but the city had been without a traffic inspector for several months and that gap had allowed issues to slip through.

"Our traffic inspector had left the city a few months ago, so we've been without one for a few months," the presenter said. "We do have somebody—they started literally this week—so we're getting them up to speed."

Staff said larger projects generally have better oversight but smaller contractors or some private development sites have produced recurring problems. The presenter encouraged residents to file concerns through the city's myCville portal or email traffic@charlottesville.gov so staff can inspect and follow up, while acknowledging one inspector cannot be everywhere at once.

The committee took the exchange as an operational update rather than a policy decision; staff said resourcing and the new inspector's staffing will be part of ongoing operations and follow-up.
