Open-spaces staff to apply for State Historical Fund grant to repair 17 Mile House

Open-spaces staff briefed the Board on a planned application to the Colorado State Historical Fund to repair the historic 17 Mile House. Dan Payson, speaking for project staff, outlined a scope focused on windows, doors, roof shingles, siding and associated exterior elements; staff said the grant cycle requires a minimum 25% local match and the county would need to provide matching funds if the application is successful.

Staff said the property previously received a State Historical Fund award in 2018 for barn repairs and that the application deadline is Oct. 1. The project team said they will try to preserve and reuse original fabric where feasible and coordinate detailed scope and artifacts with State Historical Fund reviewers; staff also noted the project is on the county CIP and, if funded, would begin construction the next summer.

Commissioners asked questions about the competitive nature of the program and capacity for historic-preservation contractors; staff said the grant is competitive and they have a plan B if the application is not funded. The Board offered no objection to pursuing the application and asked staff to return with any necessary approvals when the final application and matching plan are ready.
