Hanover County Human Resources told the school board on Aug. 11 that the division has markedly reduced teacher vacancies ahead of the new year and is projecting only a single teaching vacancy when classes begin.
"We only have 1 teaching vacancy that we are anticipating being able to fill," Meredith Parker, who addressed the board during recognitions and staffing remarks, said as she described the division’s hiring and new-teacher academy. Staff said more than 100 new teachers participated in the new-teacher academy and credited HR coordinators and principals for timely placements.
Board members congratulated staff and noted retention improvements compared with peaks during and just after the COVID period. Staff provided a division retention figure and said that multiple supports—such as targeted recruitment, onboarding and principal outreach—contributed to the lower vacancy rate.
Presenters asked the public and community members to refer candidates for hard-to-fill specialties; the division named agriculture education at Patrick Henry High School as an example where applicants are still welcome.
The board accepted the report and moved on to instructional-technology presentations and other agenda items.
