Police chief: Corrales not receiving targeted DWI enforcement funds; village receives broader traffic enforcement grants

Councilors asked how the village is utilizing its DWI and related traffic‑enforcement funds.

The police chief (S9) told the council that the department is not currently receiving specific DWI enforcement monies because saturation patrols and checkpoints were not productive in Corrales. “For the state DOT DWI funds, we are not receiving any specific DWI enforcement monies because our saturation patrols and checkpoints were not productive,” the chief said, adding that the village does receive funds for broader traffic enforcement and STEP programming.

The chief explained that smaller agencies often face reimbursement and administrative constraints — for example, some task‑force agreements did not reimburse for employer FICA costs, which made participation impractical for Corrales. The department said it will continue to pursue other enforcement strategies that are productive for the village and to track related grant funds in a special fund where required.
