Board says it will let attorneys handle lawsuits, moves to closed session

Board Chair Rob Walter addressed recent litigation involving the district and said the board will not comment publicly on active cases while they involve current students.

"The lawsuits do raise significant legal issues that extend beyond Cabarrus County Schools," Walter said. "So our attorneys are reviewing these filings, and the board will respond through the courts when that's appropriate. Our focus remains, as it always has been, to provide a safe, welcoming, and respectful educational environment for every student. ... Because these are active cases involving students, we're not going to be commenting on specific allegations, while the litigation is pending."

Later in the meeting the board voted to convene in closed session "pursuant to General Statute 143-318.11(a)(1) to prevent the disclosure of confidential information ... to consult with its attorneys ... to preserve the attorney-client privilege pursuant to General Statute 143-318.11(a)(3), including the case involving Brandon Matthews, and to consider confidential personal matters pursuant to General Statute 143-318.11(a)(6)." The motion to enter closed session passed by voice vote and the public meeting ended.
