Parent seeks one-year assignment exemption for incoming exchange student

Catherine Gulich requested a one-year school-assignment exemption for a foreign exchange student arriving Aug. 17 so he may attend the same high school as host siblings.

"My name is Catherine Gulich, and I'm here to respectfully request a 1 year school assignment exemption for our foreign exchange student who will be with us August 17," Gulich said. She explained the student will live with the family during the 2026-27 school year and that the household's address is zoned for Mount Pleasant High School while her host children attend West Cabarrus through program choice. Gulich said central office staff told her she might need to appeal or request an exemption and asked for direction because the student arrives before the school year begins.

The chair invited staff to meet with Gulich after the meeting to discuss next steps and possible appeal or exemption pathways.
