Committee details Crosby Middle School condition: $39.4M in known repairs, $103M to replace (May 2026 estimate)

Long-range planning team members told Crosby ISD trustees that targeted inspections of Crosby Middle School identified foundation, roof, mechanical/electrical/plumbing and code deficiencies that together produced an initial repair estimate of about $39.35 million.

“We have an updated recommendation to the board ... our current estimated repairs as of May 2026 is $39,400,000,” said Caitlin Hawkins, a parent on the committee, adding that the committee expects ongoing assessment work could identify additional issues and raise repair costs. Hawkins and other presenters said a full replacement was estimated at $103 million in May 2026 and could reach $110 million by the time the project would go to bid.

Panel members explained their rationale for recommending a replacement path in some scenarios: if the facility condition index (FCI) crosses roughly 50% of replacement value, replacement often becomes more cost-effective than repeated repairs. Trustees asked for a complete structural assessment, noting some foundation areas had not yet been fully inspected because probes would be too intrusive.

Committee members and trustees also discussed interim approaches if replacement is delayed, including phased design to open a new campus initially for 7th and 8th grades with future build-out for 6th grade and maintaining essential systems to slow deterioration in the current building during planning and bidding.
