Zoning officer asks whether proposed sign rules require two-sided signs on Pugsley Road

The Town of Southeast opened a public hearing Aug. 6 to consider amending Chapter 138-44 of the planning and zoning code to update rules for signage. The proposal would change how applications for signage are handled; board members opened a five-day written comment period for residents to submit feedback.

Peter Bell, who identified himself as "zoning enforcement officer for Etana Southeast," asked a technical but practical question during public comment: "Does this in do you have to have a 2 sided sign in a place like, Pugsley Road?" Bell said some existing signs can only be seen in one direction and raised sightline and orientation concerns for corner lots. The query prompted an exchange with a board member about sign orientation and whether the amendment as drafted would address angled or single-sided signs.

Resident Lynn Eckhart said she supported the board moving forward with the change and thanked officials for acting quickly, saying it "will really help residents" in areas such as Star Ridge and Route 6. The chair closed the hearing and opened a five-day written comment period for the amendment. The board did not vote on the ordinance at the meeting and will consider written feedback before any final action.
