Superintendent flags training burden and Iowa Western funding shortfall

Superintendent Dr. Beinhof presented the district’s back-to-school timeline—new teachers start the Friday before the first full week, all teachers return on the 18th, and a full staff day and trainings precede student arrival. He said staff will receive required trainings, including blood-borne pathogen training by district nurses, and that the board will again provide a staff lunch on a staff-in-service day.

Dr. Beinhof also flagged a funding concern: while many students benefit from courses and certification opportunities at Iowa Western (vocational training and college credits), the district receives reimbursement at roughly "40¢ on the dollar," creating a fiscal strain for continued participation. A board member asked whether the district must submit for supplemental reimbursement; administrators explained the district codes attendance and claims through the student management system and that the state funding is mined from that data.

The superintendent asked board members to consider legislative priorities for the September meeting and said staff will share training links and timelines with the board and staff.
