District proposes higher student activity fees with sliding scale to close deficit

Staff presented a multi-slide analysis showing the district currently pays substantial costs for activities and athletics (staffing and transportation) and that existing student fees and gate revenue do not cover the full cost. The activities presenter recommended raising per-sport fees, applying a sliding scale tied to free/reduced lunch status, and offering payment plans or work-in-lieu arrangements for families with hardship.

"Our proposal tonight is to increase their student activity fees," the presenter said, adding staff modeled revenue assuming 70% of participants pay full price (with reduced/free percentages applied). The board discussed equity protections, including the Education Foundation and payment plans. Trustees requested a follow-up evaluation after a season and additional parent outreach; staff will bring a refined proposal to the Aug. 18 work session for a potential vote.
