Beeville ISD tells court new elementary school is not ready for students

Rolando Vasquez, a representative of the Beeville Independent School District board of trustees, told Bee County Commissioners Court on Aug. 10 that Beeville Elementary “is not ready to receive students.” He said the general contractor is behind schedule and that several areas of the project still require additional work, testing, inspections and final approval before the district can declare the building safe for occupancy.

“This is not about assigning blame,” Vasquez said. “Our responsibility as a school district is first and foremost to protect the safety and well-being of our students and our staff. We cannot allow the pressure of a scheduled opening date to take precedence over completing the work properly.” He said Beeville ISD was working with the contractor, architects, engineers and inspectors to identify outstanding items and establish a realistic timeline for completion.

The court heard the district’s request that safety—not schedule—drive the decision to let students occupy the building.
