Christian County to plan programs after initial $37,000 opioid settlement check

The commission discussed recently received opioid settlement funds and how to steward the money. The Chair said the county has received one check "around $37,000" and expected several more; he added, "I think we're gonna have probably over $800,000 that we can we can look at." Commissioners agreed to hold planning meetings in August–October to scope programs and review expected receipts before committing funds.

Speakers flagged the need to avoid spending the pot immediately and suggested pacing programs so funds could provide support over many years. The Chair emphasized that multiple checks were still outstanding and that the county's attorney in St. Louis would be contacted if payments did not arrive.

The commission discussed splitting funds across the court system, the sheriff's office and community-oriented programs, and asked staff to assemble financial detail and a schedule of expected receipts to guide allocation decisions.
