Council hears three street-closure requests including Sept. 11 ''Run to Remember'

City Clerk Cassandra Redd asked the council to place three proposed street closures on the annual calendar so staff can return with formal resolutions on Aug. 17. The first, for an event led by Jose Vilia, was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5; Redd said Vilia will pay overtime charges as he has in prior years.

Redd then summarized a planned multi-day closure requested by Assumption Church that staff and the chief reviewed; she described it as staging on the church lot with limited impacts to two or three houses and assured council members those residents would be able to leave if needed. Finally she described a "Walk to Remember" planned for Sept. 11 to proceed from Main Street to the riverfront with a bell-ringing at the riverfront; she said the event is open to everyone.

At the same time Chief Seymour described a related memorial "Run to Remember," starting at the firehouse at 08:46 a.m. "08:46, if you remember, was the time that the 1st tower was struck," Seymour said, and added the event would be free, supported by a corporate sponsor and would not collect fees from participants; organizers will invite donations to the Peekskill Fallen Firefighters Foundation or the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Seymour also asked whether the city would permit employees who participate to arrive 30 minutes late; the mayor said that would be acceptable.
