Officials say interoperability and federal encryption timelines justify early planning for new radios

A central thread in the Jackson County meeting was the technical argument for replacing 800 MHz radios: first-responder leaders warned incompatible equipment undermines mutual aid, and some commissioners cited federal encryption timelines as a driving urgency.

"If we have a hodgepodge of radios, are is that gonna be a problem?" asked Tim McEldowney, chairman of the Jackson County Fire Chiefs, describing the risk that different municipal purchases could produce incompatible equipment during emergencies. McEldowney and other chiefs said a countywide coordinated purchase solved prior interoperability problems.

Commissioner Duckham and other members probed whether there are ongoing radio failures; Duckham said he had not heard of broad failure rates and pushed for clarity on the mandate timeline. Staff and commissioners discussed that encryption for law-enforcement channels is a separate technical requirement and may impose additional work and equipment upgrades, which supporters used to justify moving the ballot question forward now.
