Alma council debates workweek and hours, chooses to keep Friday

The council debated Item 8 and related proposals to change city administrative hours of operation from a five-day schedule to an eight-hour day concentrated Monday–Thursday.

One councilor (Speaker 11) moved that city hours be 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday; others noted that many salaried employees already work through lunch and that an across-the-board shift to Monday–Thursday could create staffing gaps for residents who rely on Friday access. The mayor (Speaker 1) interrupted to note the item was drifting from the original proposal and emphasized the council intended to keep Friday as a workday at this meeting.

Outcome: Council did not adopt a Monday–Thursday schedule and moved on to other agenda items; a later brief discussion (Items 9 and 10) about reducing staff hours from 48 to 32 likewise produced no enactment and the meeting adjourned at 7:18 p.m.
