County administrator briefs commissioners on dog-shelter grant pursuit and sheriff facility progress

The County Administrator told commissioners staff are working with humane organizations and other partners to refine operations at the county dog shelter and are preparing a grant application (with finance staff) to replace the shelter's cooling system; the grant is due at the end of the month.

"We're continuing to tweak the existing system...the ultimate goal is to replace that cooling system," the County Administrator said, adding that staff expect to submit a grant application with Zach from finance. The administrator said a new operational strategy is being developed for the coming year.

On the sheriff's office facility, the administrator reported significant masonry completed on the west façade by the juvenile court side, said masons are now working on the front façade, and that procurement of furniture and IT equipment is being planned ahead of substantial completion expected in the spring. The administrator and Commissioner McIntosh plan to tour the facility later in the day.

Why it matters: The cooling-system grant could affect animal-welfare operations and operating costs, while the sheriff's facility completion triggers procurement, moving staff and capital-equipment decisions.
