Mayor: $3.5 million county grant will fund 34th Street playground, construction to begin in September

Mayor Jay told the council the administration will recommend two contracts to build a new 34th Street Playground and Recreation Area and that the city has secured a $3,500,000 grant from the county to cover the project costs. "We're hoping to break ground around September 14 and the entire facility will be ready in time for next summer," he said, outlining plans for a modern playground, a new building with restrooms and offices, basketball courts (including a dunk court), tennis and pickleball courts, and an outdoor stage for family events.

Council members praised the beach replenishment and summer programming tied to broader investment in the beachfront. The mayor also noted other capital actions: demolition of the old public safety building is expected to begin Oct. 13, with construction of a new public safety facility beginning in the new year, and reconstruction work between 14th and 16th Streets is also slated to start the same week. The administration said work on the 34th Street project will continue the city's efforts to revitalize that corridor and support local businesses.
