Youth commissioners discuss birdhouse project logistics and wildlife timing

Commissioners spent substantial time discussing details for a proposed community birdhouse-building event, focusing on design, mounting and timing. An experienced speaker recommended timing the event well before local birds begin nesting, saying, "If you do wanna do that one, you would need to do it sooner rather than later because the birds can start nesting in the February, March time frames." The same speaker described entrance-hole sizes used by common finches and warned that holes that are too large invite predators.

Members proposed limiting participation per youth commissioner for supervision, holding RSVP-controlled slots and possibly running a small contest and online gallery of finished birdhouses. Staff said they would check with the city attorney about mounting birdhouses on city poles and would return with mounting options and recommended materials.
