Tax assessor: over half of county revalued this year, online appeals increasing; staff shortages noted

Tax assessor Steve Balfour told the Douglas County Board that the assessor’s office completed a revaluation covering more than 51% of properties this year, a level he said is consistent with state guidelines. He said that the office handled roughly 2,700 appeals last year, about 1,200 of which were submitted online, and that these numbers drive the need for additional staff.

"We revalued in excess of 51% of our properties this year...So it's gonna show some...appeals because of that," Balfour said, adding that the online portal allows taxpayers to submit comparables and often helps them see that their assessment aligns with neighbors. He told commissioners the office needs more staff and updated property photos to keep pace with market changes and state performance metrics.
