Judge orders emergency competency evaluation for Jose Guevara after new medical concerns

Defense counsel informed the court of newly provided physician notes and expressed concerns about the defendant's competency. Judge Stephanie Boyd responded by ordering an emergency competency evaluation and instructing the clerk to arrange it with the magistrate's judge.

"I mean, legally, I have to give him a competency evaluation," Judge Boyd said after counsel said the defendant’s mother had submitted a physician’s note. The court directed clerk Norma to request an emergency competency evaluation and recalled the case for the next available competency hearing.

The court emphasized the late timing of the concerns — the case had been on the docket since June — and told counsel to coordinate with magistrate staff to expedite the evaluation and report back to the court.
