BOE staff displayed how ranked columns appear on both electronic ballot-marking devices and the redesigned paper ballot. Randy Leggett, the ballot designer and programmer, said the electronic interface repeats the contest across columns for each rank and will prevent overvotes on touchscreen devices.
"The good thing about the ballot marking devices, unlike the paper devices, it will not let you overvote," Leggett said during his demonstration of the device interface. BOE staff also described audio prompts, language line services and plans to test accessibility with visually impaired voters.
Director Evans said the office will hold in-person 'RCV palooza' events in all wards, bring equipment to community centers and senior facilities, and provide palm cards, FAQs and videos on BOE's website. She acknowledged size and real-estate trade-offs on paper ballots but said BOE will make materials and one-on-one help available at vote centers.
