Residents demand independent review of town animal shelter after death of dog 'Buttercup'

A string of residents and advocates demanded the town commission an independent review of the animal shelter's leadership and operations after the death of a dog referred to as "Buttercup," saying state audits and years of complaints indicate systemic management and oversight problems.

"Buttercup was only 3 years old...she spent nearly a year inside the town of Hempstead bridal shelter...but before we could bring her home, Buttercup died," said Nick Vitolo, a local rescue founder, who urged the board to "commission an independent review of the shelter's leadership, operations, rescue process, and emergency procedures." He said volunteers and rescuers reported repeated management and transparency failures and that the community has lost confidence in the acting director.

Town leadership responded sharply to some allegations, saying it would be irresponsible to presume causation without a full review and urging that any evidence be submitted to staff for follow up. Other speakers, including volunteers who defended the staff, said they were distraught by the death but did not believe the shelter had acted improperly in the incident. The supervisor said the town would accept submissions and convene the relevant officials, and some speakers asked for formal independent oversight to restore public trust.

The meeting record shows a contested public debate: advocates asked for accountability and an independent audit; town officials urged caution, asked for documentation and promised follow up with the building department, town attorney and other staff.
