Presenter says DARPA Lift Challenge prioritizes safety and partners with FAA

"Here at the DARPA Lift Challenge, safety is paramount," the presenter said, noting an active partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration and operational safeguards intended to reduce risk during flights.

The presenter said all remote pilots participating in the challenge are certified under FAA Part 107 and "have demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of airspace rules, emergency procedures, and safe unmanned flight operations." He added that pilots and their teams designed, built, tested and refined the systems, which gives them a deep understanding of performance limits, failure modes and recovery actions. According to the presenter, combining regulatory compliance with engineering ownership "ensures that every flight is conducted with discipline, accountability, and precision" and makes safety the foundation for moving innovations into real‑world use.
