How sponsors shape Equal Justice Works fellowship selections

Equal Justice Works described sponsors as central to the selection process for Design Your Own fellows. Lauren Hartley said sponsors — most often law firms and corporate legal departments — provide financial and other support and are “the ultimate audience for the proposal” because they review slates and interview candidates for funded positions.

Hartley noted sponsor preferences (issue areas and geographies) will be published before interview cycles and that some sponsors co‑sponsor fellowships. She cautioned that sponsors’ internal rules or state law constraints (for example, restrictions tied to anti‑DEI laws in some states) may affect which proposals a given sponsor can select; applicants should consider language and framing when writing proposals so they remain eligible across a broader set of sponsors.

Sponsors are engaged throughout the cycle: alumni reviewers produce qualitative feedback, Equal Justice Works compiles a slate of 8–10 applications for sponsors, and sponsors then interview and make offers from November through March, with the organization aiming to finish selection by March.
