Children’s Cabinet outlines CBCAP renewals; no new funding expected for slate

Craig Barnes, assistant deputy with the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund, briefed the Cabinet on the upcoming CBCAP award slate and emphasized it continues existing grantees with no major changes.

"The grant award period will start October 1. It'll cycle on the federal fiscal year and wrap up at the September 2027," Barnes said, noting the Cabinet had previously approved the authority to proceed with a non-compete renewal in April and that formal grant notices will be issued only after the federal award notice is received.

Deputy director Melissa Rooker added that staff do not anticipate a change in the federal allocation size for the program this year, and that if additional federal funds were unexpectedly received the Cabinet would return to discuss allocation options. Cabinet members had no questions and no additional vote was required for this slate.

The presentation covered administrative timing, the “upstream” prevention focus of CBCAP (including crisis nurseries and home visiting), and a reminder that the Kansas Children’s Service League performs the statewide grantee role required by the program.
