Delegates reject push to move Washington primary to June

The Washington State Democratic Convention rejected a resolution to move the state primary from August to June after a substantive debate over electoral logistics, turnout and campaign fairness.

Kevin Buck, a precinct committee officer who supported the change, said an earlier primary "would give a lot more time for voters and volunteers to be a more effective timeline" and help challengers unite supporters and fundraising. Opponents emphasized administrative capacity: Wayland Menzia, a former Washington secretary of state office employee, warned the proposal "does not call out that the federal government has gutted all election security infrastructure" and that counties have unequal resources. Kristen Larson argued late primaries give incumbents an "undemocratic advantage," while William Phil said moving filing week earlier would force campaigns to mobilize during the legislature's session and favor better-funded candidates.

The resolutions committee recommended do not pass; delegates upheld that recommendation on the ballot, with the committee's position prevailing in the vote.

The debate centered on trade-offs between expanding time for challengers to organize and the operational demands on county election offices. No formal amendments to the resolution passed on the floor. Any next steps would depend on whether authors revise the proposal and return it for further consideration.
